The Writing Process

Yes, believe it or not, there is a process to writing!

The process, which can be viewed under different terms, but still follows a base sequence:

1. Pre-writing: This is the portion of the writing process where you decide what you would like to write, jot down some ideas as an outline to your thoughts.  Concept maps or other types of webs, such as story webs, are great for this portion of the writing process to help you better organize your thoughts.

2. Writing/Drafting: You have your ideas, and now you need to write them down in paragraph form.  This is your first draft of writing.

3. Editing: Editing is a very important part of your writing.  A good writer always goes back after they wrote their first draft to edit the material that they wrote for better clarity.  When you edit, you're looking for something as small as the need for a period at the end of a sentence, or a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence, or for proper nouns.

4. Proofreading/Evaluating: You will proofread your paper next for any context mistakes, or perhaps an area that could use better description or persuasion.

5. Publishing: When you publish your work, you write your final piece, in your best handwriting or as a type-written piece.  It is the copy that you will hand into the teacher as though you expect it to be published in a magazine, as a book, or in a newspaper.  Your finished piece should be celebrated because it is a great piece of writing!  This is the final step in the writing process, because you have already gone through and made this piece your best by going through and looking over your paper to edit, revise, proofread, evaluate, etc.  Sometimes you will need to do these steps more than once before you make a final draft!  Good writers can always do something to make their writing better.

*The following websites will explain the meaning of each of the steps of the writing process as I have on this page.  Please visit them for further breakdowns of each step in the writing process.
